1984 Named Book of the Century

George Orwell’s 1984 has been chosen as Book of the Century following a poll conducted by the the Book Marketing Society.

The organisers said: “Orwell’s 1984 is as relevant today as it was when it was first published in 1949. The novel has left a profound impression upon the English language itself. 1984, its terminology and its author have become bywords when discussing privacy and state-security issues.

The nightmare vision that Orwell evoked in his novel of an invasive surveillance society is swiftly becoming a reality, with an estimated five million CCTV cameras, one for every 12 people, now monitoring our every move. Big Brother really is watching you!”.

The winner was selected from an online poll conducted by Guardian Unlimited. 1984 came in first place with 22% of the vote.

After I'd noticed for myself I noticed another blogger had already written about

Ask.com has upgraded to a new interface called, Ask3D. The 3D makes reference to the three panels of information on the search results page. Ask X was the development playground for Ask3D and includes some interesting features including the display of search results from specialized data sources that are unique to the query.

At first glance, the big difference between Ask X and Ask3D is the initial interface. Ask X is a search box and nothing else. Ask3D provides categories for Web, Images, Ask City, News, Blogs and the extras: video, maps and shopping. The search results page is very similar with 3 columns.

There are a number of improvements including the binoculars function showing larger preview images, one click saving to your Ask favorites and in some cases, the ability to play video clips from the third column search results.

I think this is a great effort from Ask and the user experience and aesthetics are a big improvement. The variety of search results sources from the specialty data bases is great, but some of the results in the 3rd column, especially video, have a ways to go in terms of relevancy.

Belfast ABC will host a benefit evening in aid of Mumia Abu Jamals defence fund

On Saturday June 23rd Belfast ABC will be hosting an evening in support of Mumia Abu Jamal who's fate hangs in the balance amid colliding appeals by both prosecution and defence the outcome of which could see either the quashing of his bogus conviction for the shooting dead of a Philadelphia policeman 26 years ago or indeed the reinstatement of his death penalty which was dropped in 2001.
The event will take place in Kellys cellars and will include the showing of the film 'Mumia Abu Jamal, live from death row', a series of behind glass interviews in which the former Black Panther articulates his feelings on democracy, social justice and his possible execution.
A portion of the funds raised will also go towards supporting the fantastic efforts of jailhouse lawyer and anarchist life prisoner Harold Thompson who provides free legal advice for his fellow impoverished prisoners despite being denied the most basic materials required for such an important service.
Mumia Abu Jamal will learn if he is to walk free or die within 60 days of his appeal which began on May 17th.
